The milestone is the latest in a series of records for the stock market. The point surge sparked cheers from the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. The stock market has consistently moved higher since hitting rock bottom in March 2009 in the wake of the financial crisis. Markets continued to grow after the election of Donald Trump as U.S. president. The Dow was up 102 points (0.56 percent) to 20,018. The Nasdaq gained 48 points (0.9 percent) to 5,600. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index added 10 points (0.5 percent) to 2,290.
