Democrats Hold Congress ‘Sit-In’ to “Get in the Way”

Yes, it seems that the Democrats in congress are at it again.  Today, John Lewis (D) of Georgia, as well as nearly one hundred other lawmakers staged a protest in the nation’s Capitol in an effort to further push gun control nationwide.  These congressmen are demanding further background checks on firearms purchases, as well as prohibition of gun sales to suspected terrorists.

The problem with this movement is not the cause, but the means of how it is being brought to light.

Congressman John Lewis stated today: “Now is the time to get in the way, the time to act is now”.

He has stated exactly what he and nearly one hundred other Democrats have done today: “get in the way”.

These Democrats have staged a protest against their colleagues to stop congress from moving forward until a gun control bill that fits their criteria has been voted upon.  As if congress needed any more delays.

It must be remembered that John Lewis has a history of protesting the federal government, which started with his role as an active civil rights leader from the 1960s.  He was the youngest of the ‘Big Six’ civil rights leaders, as well as a founding member of the ‘Freedom Riders’ in 1960.  He has done tremendous things for the African-American community, as well as the United States as a whole.

However, it is not 1963, and it is not the battle for civil rights.

This movement has done everything to stop any progress from being made in the nation’s Capitol today, and the Democrats leading the protest have made no effort to compromise or discuss the issue with the members of the Republican party.

A spokesperson for Paul Ryan, the Republican Speaker of the House, tweeted: “The House cannot operate without members following the rules of the institution, so the House has recessed subject to the call of the chair.”

After the Republicans called the recess, the cameras inside the Capitol had been switched off.  This is when the protesting democrats took it upon themselves to stream their protest online, instead of on television, because no other attention was being given to them.

The cameras had been turned off for a reason, and that reason is because professionals do not pay attention to grown men and women acting as though they were children pouting when they do not get their way.  How is a man or a woman in a suit supposed to be respected throughout the world when s/he remains stubbornly seated on a floor like a child?
