What is Hideo Kojima even doing, honestly?

The more that I see and hear about Kojima Productions’ new game “Death Stranding”, the more confused I get. In his interview with IGN, he said “You punch or you shoot or you kick. The communication is always through these ‘sticks.’ In [Death Stranding], I want people to be connected not through sticks, but through what would be the equivalent of ropes… But of course you will be able to use the sticks too.”

What could he have meant by this? He did say also in the interview that he wanted to create an entirely new sort of action game, but through the dead sea animals and the baby being held by a naked Norman Reedus shown in the E3 trailer, what do you even do with that? A system that binds people together rather than makes people hit each other “sticks” might be a challenge for the first game of the new KojiPro.

Then again, he could totally just be screwing with us, as he’s done before with the promotion of Metal Gear Solid 2. For reference, MGS2’s advertising campaign famously omitted the character Raiden from all pre-release materials and gave the consumer the idea that you would be playing as the character Solid Snake, who was the protagonist of all Metal Gear games prior. We won’t know for sure until more information comes out about it, but it’s pretty fun to imagine what’s going on in that guy’s head.

Kojima tells Eurogamer in an interview: “The [Death Stranding] game will take a little more time to be completed, but the game for me has already started. I am going back and forth with the users, having this interaction, this connection with the people, this discussion.”
